Melissa provides Harbor House with evidence-based intervention strategies, including empirically supported practices for substance use disorder (SUD). More specifically, she offers didactic training and psychoeducation among the Tharros Team Members.

Our Team

At Harbor House Boston, we take a custom approach to each client, starting with a full understanding of each client’s needs and goals. Our team connects with each client’s clinical providers to help understand what supports are needed before he arrives at Tharros. Teras and Tharros are not affiliated with any clinical treatment (IOP/PHP, etc.) and our focus is on helping each client engage the best clinical support for their own circumstance. We have many local connections, including McLean Hospital, and we  help clients who don’t have clinical supports in place connect with appropriate resources. Darren originally joined the Harbor House team in 2015 after spending 2 years working in the Los Angeles recovery community.

At Harbor House, you can expect to meet other male residents who are committed to their sobriety, have completed some form of primary treatment, and pass regular unannounced breathalyzer and urine tests. Our community offers extensive structure, much of which is optional. Peer to peer support is an essential component of recovery and The Harbor House only accepts residents who have made a commitment to giving recovery a chance; we work together as a community to overcome the challenges in early recovery. Teras, also located in Lexington MA, offers a less structured, but still supportive model of high standards sober living.

Insights from the community

You’ve changed, but the people, places, and things around you haven’t. Some of the same triggers you had before can be reactivated and we recognize how frustrating and upsetting that can be. At Teras, clients work with their on-site case manager and our vocational coach to develop a recovery fellowship and engage work. Clients of Teras may also be involved in outpatient treatment while they develop a foundation in their recovery work, and apply to work positions. After 30 days, clients are expected to be employed while they continue progress in their recovery work.

​When you arrive at the house, you will undergo an initial discussion and orientation with the Program Director, including a dialogue on the past events that led you here. Together, we will start discussing what you want to achieve by engaging the support at Tharros. There are general rules of the house that everyone is required https://rehabliving.net/ to follow. However, experience has shown us, not every person with an addiction or alcoholism is the same. Our program isn’t cookie ­cutter; we want to get to know you and help ensure that you have what is necessary for you to achieve your goals. We help you see, what it is about you, you may have a hard time seeing.

A study of 300 individuals whom resided in Sober Living Homes (SLH) was published in 2010 by a division of the NIH (National Institute of Health) (Douglas L. Polcin, 2010). That study found that freestanding SLH’s offer enough structure, with no formal treatment, creating an optimal environment for residents ready for the next step. SLH’s provide an environment for individuals capable of handling a fair amount of autonomy and wish to take personal responsibility for their recovery. You are more likely to maintain long-term sobriety by entering and committing to a structured transitional living environment, like Harbor House. That’s why we encourage our clients to consider staying 6 months to one year.

We also include fun social events, like our weekly BBQ and bowling nights. Clients also learn life skills through one on one mentoring and fun events, like cooking with exceptional private chefs! Also included, our community offers activities, like weekend rock climbing, golf, and basketball. On Saturdays, clients can participate in engagement activities, like trampoline dodgeball, go-kart racing, and escape room challenges. We provide opportunities for meaningful development of community and positive social connection through these experiences and more.

In his leadership role at Teras House, Darren interfaces with clients, families, and our support staff. Darren’s primary focus is to promote client development of recovery skills that will serve their long-term sobriety. Darren holds a BA from Stonehill College and was most recently the Assistant Director at Harbor House. Teras does not provide transportation, but you may have a car, and ubers are readily available. Teras does provide breakfast foods, and our structure is designed around the availability of the community; part of this structure includes meetings and activities, designed to foster community and fellowship.

This less structured residence is designed to support clients when they have 25+ hours of work or other outside structure weekly, which can be developed with assistance from our team, in the first 30 days. Some treatment facilities provide care for 30, 60 or 90+ days. If you’ve completed a program like this, you’re probably feeling very good about your recovery, as you should. At Harbor House, we want to help you achieve your life goals and long­-term sobriety with the tools and foundation you’ve already acquired. Leaving a residential, inpatient, or outpatient treatment environment is often more challenging than expected.

Dr. Zarnegar brings a wealth of intuitive and insightful knowledge rooted from a quarter century of clinical experience.Dr. Zarengar received a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology, from California School of Professional Psychology and a Psy.D. In psychoanalysis, from the Institute of Contemporary Psychoanalysis. She has a Master’s Degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from Loma Linda University and has been a licensed M.F.T since 1988.
